1. Quick introduction to Mac Finder

Here's some quick, basic how-to on the mac.

Let's tour the desktop.

These lessons may take a few days. If your timer goes off WHILE you are watching a video or doing an activity, try to finish the video and the activity with that video.

THEN Keep the remaining activities and videos for the next day

When ALL the applications are closed, this is kind of what your computer will look like.

Menu Bar

 

Let's take a look at the top of your desktop. This thin strip is called the Menu Bar. It's made of several pieces... not all are important to what you will be doing initially. But here's a few items to learn

Mac Menu Bar

  1. The Apple Menu
    This menu has functions that relate to the computer itself which may be useful at any time during your work.
  2. The Application Menu
    This menu will change names to match the application you're currently using. Here, you'll find functions like,
    • Preferences
    • Print
    • Close
    • Quit
    • Etc.
  3. File Menu
    This (along with the remaining menu items) are fairly common for all applicaitons. Here, you'll find functions like,
    • Save
    • Print
    • Close File
    • Etc.
  4. Edit Menu
    This menu will give you certain editing funcitons to modify the current open document.
    • Cut
    • Copy
    • Paste
    • Etc.
  5. View Menu
    Here you can modify certain view properties like:
    • Showing measurement rulers
    • Sorting
    • Icon size
    • Etc.
  6. Go Menu
    Jumps to specific folders & storage areas in the memory of the computer
  7. Window Menu
    Useful functions to control & modify the actual application window.
  8. Help Menu
    You should be able to figure this out.

 


 

 

ACTIVITY 1

  1. Select a FOLDER on the desktop
  2. Go to the menu bar and click FILE
  3. Click OPEN to see the contents of the folder
  4. Go to the menu bar and click FILE
  5. Click CLOSE WINDOW to dismiss the folder

ACTIVITY 2

  1. Select an IMAGE on the desktop
  2. Go to the menu bar and click FILE
  3. Click QUICK LOOK to preview the image
  4. Go to the menu bar and click FILE
  5. Click CLOSE QUICK LOOK to preview the image

ACTIVITY 3

  1. Select a FOLDER on the desktop
  2. Go to the menu bar and click VIEW
  3. Change the folder window among the following
    • List View
    • Icon View
    • Column View
    • Gallery View
  4. Go to the menu bar and click FILE
  5. Click CLOSE WINDOW to dismiss the folder
